5-19-21 Today is the last update as graduation is on Friday! I just want to say that I really enjoyed teaching your children this year! I will miss them all. They have grown so much and I am so proud of all of them!
Today we did a lot of housekeeping. We had snack with our 8th grade buddies and gave them cards. We did an art project that is coming home today. The student’s pencil boxes and portfolios are also coming home.
I read the story, Clifford’s Big Red School.
We practiced for graduation and went outside. We had to dry off the slides first but it was really hot out and the students had a lot of fun.

5-17-21 We had a fun and different Monday! We went over to the church with all of preschool to practice for our graduation. We did our processional, our readings and our songs.
Next we came into school and washed hands for snack and to grab our beach towels. We went out to the Mary garden with all of preschool and had a granola bar and then we had our popsicle party!
When we came back into school, we didn’t have much time left so we did our art project for the day. It is a flower and it is coming home.

5-14-21 Today I read the bible story about Jesus ascending to Heaven. The story mentioned that Jesus would descend from Heaven at the end to take everyone to Heaven. We talked about how we don’t know when the end will be, so we should always be kind and good so we are ready.
Today I read the story, Play Ball. It was about all sorts of fun games to play with different kinds of balls. We did a survey at the end to see what the student’s favorites are.
The rest of the time was all about shapes. The students did a shape art project. They drew different shapes and then we outlined them with a thick black line. The students then water colored them at group time.
Another group played a shape matching game.
The last group made shapes with straws and twist ties. We switched around every 15 minutes so the students could do all the activities.
We went outside even though it was sprinkling a little bit.

5-12-21 Today we talked about what the student’s favorite ball game was.
I read the story, Bounce. It was about all things that bounce.
Today in Seeds, we talked about Mother’s day. The gospel from last Sunday was about loving everyone. This was our last Seeds magazine for the year.
We finished our gifts for father’s day today and those are coming home. The students will want to find a good hiding place for them.
We did splat art. We took a large piece of paper outside and stretched it out. The students had little puffballs that got dipped into paint. Then the students threw it really hard at the paper to make a splat. After it dried, each student got to take a section home.
We continue to practice for graduation.

5-10-21 Today all of the preschool classes went down to the music room to practice our songs for graduation. They did an awesome job!
We then practiced our parts in the classroom of what we will be saying or doing for graduation.
I read the story, The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Some of the students hadn’t heard that one before. We did a rhyming word activity.
We started making a special something for the next holiday. The students also played a sight word matching game.

Today was Cinco de Mayo. We talked about what this is and the students listened to a story titled, Marco’s Cinco de Mayo.
All the activities we did today centered around this holiday. The students played a taco game. They finished a pattern with symbols from this holiday. We made paper sombreros. The students also did a counting and coloring ball sheet.
We were able to go see the junior high play called, The 10 Best/Worst things about Middle School. It was very funny. If you get an opportunity to see it, you will love it.

5-3-21 Today we started our unit on balls. We talked about the different kinds of balls and had many in our classroom to look at. We made a chart of everything that we knew about balls.
I read the story, The Little Red Hen. Our art project was about the story.
We also talked about tongue twisters and practiced saying some. I read the story, She Sells Seashells.
During our small group time, one group finished the art project. Another group did a graphing sheet. One did a retelling of the little red hen and the last group put numbers in number order. The numbers were written on ping pong balls. We rotated through all the stations.

4-30-21 Today was our last day for our recycling unit. The students worked on a counting recyclables paper. We also did an art project with egg cartons. We made turtles. They turned out adorable!
The students did a beanbag toss and then marked where it landed on a white board so we could see the results as we went along.
We were unable to use the gym today as the lights were set up for the play next week so we went outside to run around since it is so nice out.
I read the story, Dinosaur Woods. It was about animals trying to save their home. They built a dinosaur to scare people away. Then the dinosaur tripped and they were discovered. It turned out that they were endangered species so the woods was protected.
I read bible stories today. We learned about Daniel in the lions den and Jonah.
We went outside on this glorious day.

4-28-21 We had a very busy day today. We started by doing thank you’s for the fish fry. We also made graduation cards for our 8th grade buddies.
In Seeds magazine, we talked about all the different communities we belong to. Such as our classroom community, school community, church community and many more. The gospel on Sunday is about Jesus is the vine and we are the branches.
We watched a short video about recycling and did a recycle or trash paper. We also worked on making trains with cubes. The students had to make a pattern.
I showed the teacher appreciation video to the students. Thank you all for making this a great year! The video brought tears to my eyes.

4-26-21 We had music today. Mrs. Gorr came to our room to sing songs with us.
I read the story, Don’t lose it….Reuse it! This book was about how we can use items for other things. We made an octopus with a toilet paper roll for our art project today.
We also did an activity where I would give them a sound that a letter makes. The students had to go stand on the right letter on the rug.
We did a recycling graph sheet. We also built with blocks and then used a measuring tape to see how big it was.
We went outside on this beautiful day.

4-23-21 I read some stories from the bible. One was about Hannah who prayed to God to give her a child and she promised to give the child back to God. She did have a son and named him Samuel. When he got old enough, he went to live at the temple to serve God. One night he heard a voice and thought it was Eli but Eli told him the next time he heard the voice to say, “Speak Lord, I am listening.” God talked to Samuel.
We went to the gym and played rainbow tag.
I read the story, The Paper bag Princess. It was a cute story about a girl that had to dress up in a paper bag. One more item that can be reused or recycled.
We made windsocks and played a recycling game. The students also did a smart tv activity of sorting trash.
We did movement indoors as it was too wet outside.

4-21-21 Today I read a book titled, The Earth and I. It was about a child that talked about the Earth as it’s friend. The child took care of the Earth and felt sad when the Earth was polluted.
We practiced our graduation songs.
In our Seeds magazine, we learned that Jesus is the Good Shepherd and that we are his sheep. He takes care of us.
We made crayon resist watercolor pictures. The students drew rainbows and then put blue watercolor over it.
We played bingo with pictures of trash and recyclables.
We went outside on this chilly day.

4-19-21 We had music today.
I read the story, Sam Helps Recycle. It was about a dog that taught us about recycling and he was worried about his bowl being in the recycle bin. At the end, his owners had a new bowl for him made from recycled materials.
We learned about different kinds of garbage trucks and where the trucks take the garbage.
We did an alphabet sort. There were crinkled up papers with letter on them. The students had to open them up and do a sort by capital or lowercase letters.
We did a tulip art project.
We went outside on this cold day.

4-16-21 Today I read bible stories. We learned about Moses parting the Red Sea, getting the 10 Commandments, and being in the desert for 40 days.
I read a poem called Litter Monster and then we talked about what happens when trash gets thrown out the window. I dumped a bag of clean garbage into the middle of the carpet and then turned on a big fan to show what happens when the wind blows trash around.
I read the story, The Adventures of Harry and Gary. It is about 2 sea turtles and one almost chokes on a plastic bag because he thought it was a jellyfish. I then showed pictures of pollution in our oceans.
We learned how a rain cloud works. We filled a jar ¾ full of water(air) and then squirted some shaving cream(cloud) on top. Then I dripped food coloring(rain) on the top and after a little while it came through the cloud into the air.
We did an Earth Day art project today.
On our way outside, we admired all the flowers blooming and looked for trashcans. We noticed the dumpsters behind the school and the trashcan by the merry-go-round on the playground.

4-14-21 Today in Seeds magazine, we learned that Jesus came and visited with his friends. The disciples were scared after Jesus died and didn’t want to die in the same way so they hid away. Jesus came to visit them and showed them his hands and feet and the disciples believed. Jesus told them to go out into the world and teach everyone about God.
I read the story, I Stink. It was about a garbage truck and what his job is. We talked about the different types of garbage, some that stink and others that don’t such as a wrapper.
We did a listening activity today. I gave instructions and then the students needed to do what I said. Those were put into their portfolios.
We made flowers for an art project today. The student also got to make shapes with playdoh and toothpicks.
We went outside today.
Mrs. Sirek did a practice tornado drill with the students in the afternoon as it is severe weather awareness week. Tomorrow the sirens will go off for a tornado drill.

4-12-21 We had music today and the music teacher helped us practice our songs for graduation.
I read the story, Something From Nothing about a grandpa that makes his grandson a blanket. As it wears out, the grandpa reworks it into something else. The blanket was made into a coat, then a vest, a tie, a handkerchief and finally a button. This fits right in with our unit of study.
We talked about magnets and I demonstrated that a magnet can move a paper clip through an object such as a paper plate. Then the students had to pretend that my hand was a magnet and they were metal and they had to move according to what my hand did. They leaned side-to-side, back and forth, up and down and even bounced. They did awesome.
We recycled newspaper into snails today for our art project.
The students did a bowling activity with used water bottles that had a little bit of sand in the bottom. The bottles were set up like bowling pins and the students got to roll a ball and then tell how many they knocked down and how many were left standing.
We also did an activity with some pattern blocks to learn counting backwards.
It was too wet outside so we did movement indoors.

4-9-21 I read some children’s bible stories to the students today. We read about Jesus washing his disciple’s feet, the last supper, Jesus’ death on the cross and Jesus rising from the dead on Easter.
We went to the gym today and the students used scooters.
I read the story, Hush. It was a Thai lullaby.
We continue to learn about reduce, reuse, recycle. The students did an activity with Mrs. Jirak. The children had to sort pictures of items and put them on a chart for recycling.
We did an art project with tubes and paper towels. It was a beautiful butterfly. The students also reviewed shapes and colors. We were unable to go outside as it was drizzling. So, we did movement indoors.

I hope everyone had a great spring break! It is unbelievable how fast this year is going!
In our Seeds magazine, we learned that Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. He died for us to give us new life. We talked about signs of spring and new life as well.
We started learning a song that will be sung for the preschool graduation. The students will be doing sign language with it.
We started our unit on reduce, reuse, recycle. We talked about what all those words mean. We read the story There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed Some Trash and Recyclables. We made robots as an art project using cardboard from cracker boxes.
We learned how to make tallies. The students made tallies after counting items. They also worked on letter identification and sounds.
It was too wet outside to go out so we did movement in the classroom.

3-26-21 Today I read the story, The Miracle of Easter. It started talking about Spring and how there is new life in Spring. Then the story talks about Jesus and his last week. The story ends at Easter when Jesus rises to new life and also that he gave us new life as we could now go to Heaven. The students made a cross depicting Jesus’ last week, starting with Palm Sunday.
We went to the gym today and played rainbow tag.
The students did dot paint crosses and a color by number Easter sheet. We also made beautiful Easter eggs that are coming home today. I sprayed shaving cream on a platter and then asked the students what color paint they wanted me to drip on the shaving cream. After that the students took a q-tip and made lines through the shaving cream and then put their egg on top and pressed down. Then the students squeegeed the excess shaving cream off. Those are coming home today.

3-24-21 Today is Seeds we talked about Palm Sunday, as that is this coming Sunday. The story was about Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey and the people greeted him by shouting Hosanna! This is similar to shouting Hooray! We did some play acting of this in the classroom.
I read the story, Minerva Louise and the Colorful Eggs. It was about a hen that keeps finding colorful eggs and she sits on them to try to hatch them. Then she notices children picking them up. We made Easter Bunnies today for our art project. The students made a positional words Easter booklet and did a color by sight word page.
We did movement in the classroom as it was too wet outside. We also did a dice game where the students rolled a dice and then had to do specific directions such as pretend to eat a carrot and then hop like a bunny.

3-22-21 Easter is the theme this week. I read an Easter story and the students each got a half of an egg. Each side of the egg had pictures on and the students needed to go find the other person with a rhyming word that matched with their own card.
We did a rhyming paper. Those are coming home today.
We did a Jelly bean prayer. The students will be bringing home the prayer. We also made Easter eggs by having a teacher squirt paint onto our egg and then the students got to squeegee the colors around. These eggs turned out beautiful!

3-17-21 The students had quite a surprise when they got to school today. A leprechaun had left chocolate coins in their lockers!
We continued learning about St. Patrick today. We learned that after St. Patrick was saved from being a slave, he became a priest and then went back to Ireland to teach the people about God. He used a shamrock to represent the Trinity, God in three persons, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
I read the story, How to Catch a Leprechaun. The students colored a Trinity page and did a shamrock sort.
In Seeds, Jesus tells us that a seed needs to be planted otherwise it just stays a seed. If you plant a seed, it grows and makes more seeds. The gospel also tells us that Jesus knew he was going to die but by dying, he would bring new life.
We did our Virtus, personal safety lesson today since everyone was here. I read the story, My Body! What I say Goes. We talked about feelings and who to talk to if they need to talk to someone. The story talks about private parts being covered by your swimsuit or underwear. I skipped some pages as I feel those things are for parents to teach. Be sure to ask your child what they learned.

3-15-21 Sorry this is a day late but I left immediately after doing bus duty yesterday and didn’t take my computer home.
We started learning about St. Patrick. He was taken from his home country of England and taken to Ireland and was a slave. God came to him and told him there was a ship in the harbor to take him home. We will finish learning about him on Wednesday.
We made a little St. Patrick book. For art the students made a shamrock. The students learned a little leprechaun poem.
I read the story, The Luckiest Leprechaun.

3-12-21 We started the day by looking at pictures of buildings from here in town. I asked the students what people do in these buildings. One was the pet store, McDonald’s, the library and a bank. The students had great answers.
For religion we continue with how God created everything and the student have been doing a color page that goes with it.
The children played scooter tag in the gym today. They loved it!
I read the story, The Pot that Juan Built. The story was similar in cadence to there was an old lady who swallowed a….. There were also pages that told the story of the real Juan that lived in Mexico and really made pottery.
During small group time, the students got to decorate a 2 inch square box to look like a building. They designed their own roof and then we taped them to a little village mat.
They also played a dice game. They rolled the dice that had the numbers from 21-26 written on the sides. They had to say the number and then dot paint on the corresponding number on the letter x.
We also looked at labels for environmental print. The students recognized most of these just by looking at them.

3-10-21 We did a rhyming activity to start the day. I did a chant with the students and then gave them the first 2 rhyming words and then they had to come up with more.
We looked at the book called Changes, Changes. There were no words, the students had to look for changes in the pages right next to each other.
For Seeds today, it talks about Jesus being the light of the world and he is here for us always. We talked about things that scare us and even when we are scared, Jesus is with us.
The students got to sort items according to length and then resorted by width. They also did an alphabet fill in the blank. Some of the letters were already there and the students had to figure out which came next when there was a blank.
We made x-ray people for our art project. Since it was so wet out, we went and did relays in the hallway outside of the library for an activity to get us moving.

3-8-21 We started learning about the letter Xx today. We did an activity on Starfall. We also got to look at x-rays of different animals on the light table. They did a letter X sheet.

I read the story, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. This is told from the viewpoint of the wolf. We compared the 3 different versions we have read.
The students played a hot and cold game with a partner.
They also made letters with popsicle sticks.
For our art project today, we drew our classroom as if we were looking in from the ceiling. We talked about the shapes of items they drew such as rectangles for the tables.
We went outside to enjoy the glorious weather!

3-5-21 Today the question was, what the students would like to have for a job when they get older. There were some interesting answers.
For religion we talked about Jesus wanting us to follow him by being kind and praying.
I read the story, The Three Little Javelinas. It is another version of the three little pigs. We compared the stories.
We did a lesson on symmetry. The students did an art project using symmetry. They took a coffee filter and folded it in half then spritzed some water on it. They used their markers to draw a picture on the damp coffee filter and when they opened it up, it was the same on both sides.
We also tried drawing the other half of a shape on the easel. Then we looked at one half of a picture in the mirror to see the other half.
We went to the gym today and played clean out my backyard. It is a kid version of dodge ball.

3-3-21 This morning I read the story, Building a House. In the story, it started with bare ground and then the diggers came. Next was the concrete and blocks. The story went step by step until the house was done.
For an art project today the students made houses with paper bags. Those are coming home today. The students got to stamp a pattern of animals. They also did action patterns with movements.
In Seeds today, we learned that even Jesus could get mad. He was mad that people were trying to sell things in a place where people should be praying. He had the people leave the temple and then went in to pray.
We went out and enjoyed the glorious weather!

3-1-21 Today I read the story, Build it from A to Z. This book was all about construction, from tools to equipment and the people that make it happen, all in alphabetical order.
We are learning about the letter Y this week so we did an activity on Starfall. We also made a yo-yo picture for art.
Mrs. Gorr came in for music and sang silly songs with us.
The students got to sort and classify items.

2-24-21 Today we did many things with the letter V. We did an activity on the smart TV. Our art project also was made from the letter V. V for vase. The V was the vase and then the students added flowers.
The students received a cross necklace and a small booklet of the Stations of the Cross. We went over to the church wearing our crosses and we took our booklets and looked at the little booklets as well as the stations on the wall.
I read the story, House, Sweet House. This story told of all different types of houses and that no matter where you live, your house is your home.
When we walked to the playground, we tried counting all the buildings that we could see.
We talked about dental health today and watched a short video. We learned that we should brush our teeth at least 2 times a day and floss. We learned that we have 20 baby teeth and when we get our permanent teeth, we will have 32. I told the students that we have a little kit in our room that they can play with about dental health. It has teeth and pretend tools for cleaning the teeth.
The students did a rhyming word activity.

2-22-21 Today we had music. Mrs. Gorr came and sang songs with us.
We continue our unit on building. The students got to view a couple of pictures and were asked which building is near our school. They recognized that the hospital is right by the playground. We also looked at google maps to see other buildings close to our school. The students did a directed listening activity about building a house. I would tell them the directions twice and they had to do it. First they drew a rectangle, then a triangle on top of the rectangle for the roof. They had to draw a rectangle for the door and a circle for a doorknob. They had to draw 4 squares for windows and then make a letter t inside to make it look like panes. They had to draw a chimney and then color their creation and add trees and flowers or whatever they wanted.
We learned about compound words by taking 2 words and putting them together to make another word. They did a sheet about this after we practiced.
I read, A Chair for my Mother. We also did a singing counting activity.
We went outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather!

2-19-21 Today we talked about the Stations of the Cross. We will have the opportunity to walk through the church next Wednesday to look at the Stations of the Cross.
We are learning about the letter Ww this week so we did the letter W on Starfall.com. We also did musical letters. The students walked around the letters and when the music stopped, they needed to tell me the letter and the sound it makes.
We did an art project where the students did sponge paint houses and then later added details like roads, trees, flowers, doors and windows.
We went to the gym today.

2-17-21 Today we talked about President’s day and about what a president does.
In Seeds, we learned that Jesus went out to the desert for 40 days to pray. When he came back, he spread the good news about God. We talked about Lent and Ash Wednesday.
The theme we are working on is building. We talked about and looked at pictures of different kinds of buildings. I read the story of the Three Little Pigs.
The students did an art project of the Three Little Pigs. They also were able to use cutouts to retell the story.
The students built shapes with popsicle sticks.
We did go outside for a little while this morning as the temperature and wind chill were above zero.

2-12-21 Today was all about Valentines Day except for when we went to the gym. We went twice since it is so cold out. We played two different tag games.
We watched a short video about Saint Valentine. The students then colored a valentine of their choice.
We had a Valentine treat for snack consisting of vanilla yogurt with granola and sprinkles.
For our Valentine celebration, we did 5 groups and went through stations.
The first station, the students made valentine head bands.
Second, they painted by stamping hearts with pipe cleaners shaped like hearts.
Third, the students did a heart sort page.
Fourth, they made hearts with pipe cleaners and beads.
Lastly, they did a valentine activity on the smart TV.
They had a lot of fun. Valentine bags are coming home tonight. Remember there is no school on Monday for Presidents day. Have a great long weekend! Happy Valentines Day! Mrs. Stavos
2-10-21 Today we did a rhyming words activity. I passed out a card with a picture on it to each student. Then the students needed to find the other person with a card that had a picture that rhymed with the picture they had.
I read a Valentine story. We made heart mobiles for our art project. The students glued cotton balls to a cloud shape and then attached ribbons to the cloud and hearts. The students also started a color by number but most didn’t finish before we had to move on.
We did a missing number sheet. The students needed to fill in the missing number. We did this in small groups so help could be provided.
In Seeds, we talked about the miracle where Jesus heals the leper. Then everyone wanted to follow Jesus.
We did movement in the classroom.

2-8-21 We learned about the letter Zz today.
We did a beginning sound sheet. The students had to identify a picture and then color the circle with the correct letter sound that it starts with.
We did a counting game. The students had to count objects and then put a clothespin on the number on the bottom of the card that matched the amount.
We talked about Saint Valentine. We made Valentines today. One is coming home and the other is for our 8th grade buddy. We will deliver those on Friday.
We made our Valentine’s bags and passed out our valentines so they could sit for 72 hours.
I read a Valentine book.
It is way too cold to go outside so we did movement in the classroom.

2-5-21 Sorry the update is late. I left school at noon for an appointment.
We finished our clothing unit today. I read the story, The Girl Who wore too Much. We talked about how we don’t need to have a lot to be happy.
We talked about Sister Faustina today. The Lord came to her with revelations about mercy and she wrote everything down in a diary. The students did a color page.
We did a letter Jj page and for art we made a melted snowman. The students painted and then added the parts of a snowman wherever they wanted to. We did a 5 little snowman puppet play.
The students got valentines and a sucker from the 8th grade students. We will be making some for the 8th grade next week..
We were not able to go outside because of the wind chill so we went to the gym twice.

2-3-21 Today in our Seeds magazine we learned about some of Jesus’ miracles.
I read the story, Something from Nothing. It was about a grandpa that made a blanket for his grandchild. The blanket got worn out and kept getting remade into something else.
We did a process art project today where the paint was squirted right onto the paper and then the students used combs to spread it around.
We worked on the grandparent/special person cards but didn’t quite get finished so those will come home on Friday.
We played number bingo.

2-1-21 Yesterday was the start of Catholic Schools week. Today it was awesome to see everyone as their favorite book character.

I read the story, Little Red Riding Hood. Since it is still our clothing unit we made little red riding hood for an art project.

1-29-21 Today in our Seeds supplemental book we learned that God’s holy book is called the Bible. We learned that God created everything.
We went to the gym today and were able to play on scooters. The students loved it!

1-27-21 Today the students learned about the letter Uu on Starfall.com.
I read the story, Who Wears What? The students had to guess the person that wore the clothing that was shown.
We also did a matching game, where the students had to match the person to what they wear or use such as a cowboy and his hat.
We played letter bingo.
In Seeds, we learned that Jesus brings us peace. We talked about what it means to be peaceful. The students had to identify pictures of people that were either peaceful or not.
The students did a process art project. They dipped various thicknesses of yarn or thread in paint and painted a picture with the different colors. The pictures are all very unique.
We went outside.

1-25-21 Sorry there was no update on Friday, I had a sub in the room that day.
Today we started learning the letter Uu. The students had to go find a Uu in the classroom.
We talked about where clothing comes from. The students knew they came from stores, the closet, that we could make them, and hand-me-downs.
I did a brief demonstration on crocheting and knitting and showed the students some items that I have made. They realized it would take a lot of time to make clothing.
I read, A Pocket for Corduroy. Then the students made some clothing for Corduroy and that is coming home tonight.
The music teacher came in and sang songs with the students. The children did a one-to-one correspondence counting sheet and had to write the number of items.
We went outside.

1-20-21 Since we had Friday off last week, we finally did our lesson on Martin Luther King, Jr. The students watched a short cartoon video about MLK.
We looked at different colored eggs, one brown, one white and one that was tan. I then cracked the eggs into a bowl and asked the students if they could tell which one was from the brown egg and which from the white one. They were the same on the inside. We talked about this in relation to people, that people look differently on the outside but everyone is the same on the inside.
We did a MLK art project.
In Seeds, we learned about Jesus gathering his followers. I asked the students how we follow Jesus. Some of the answers were to be kind, share, donate food to the food shelf, and pray. During Catholic schools week we will be collecting socks and underwear for the Dorothy Day Center. Catholic Schools week starts on Jan. 31.
1-13-21 We talked about our favorite shirts we wore today. We also talked about how everyone’s shirts are different. Some have stripes or polka dots, stars or snowflakes. We talked about how different kinds of clothes feel different. Some clothes are soft and some are more rough like jeans.
I read, Llama, Llama, Red Pajama. The students then did an art project by creating the pajamas that they wear and decorated them.
We did an activity with the letter Bb. I put a card with the letter Bb in the middle of the group and a card with the letter Bb crossed off in the middle as well. The students each got a card with a picture on it and had to tell if the item started with the Bb sound or not. Then they put it on the correct card.
In Seeds today, we talked about how John the Baptist was telling his friends about Jesus. His friends followed Jesus and then told their friends and family about him. When Jesus met Simon, he said he would call him Peter because this means rock. We also talked about listening.

1-11-21 We started our clothing unit. I made a chart of what the students know about clothing. Please have your child wear their favorite shirt on Wednesday.
We learned about the letter Bb and the number 18. We played alphabet bingo.
We did a rhyming word match.
I read the story, Caps for Sale. It is about a peddler that sells caps and carries all of them on his head. When he falls asleep, monkeys take all the caps. Ask your child how the peddler gets them all back.
The music teacher came and sang songs with the students.
We went outside.
1-8-21 Today we played color and shape Bingo.
The read aloud today was Shante Keys and the New Year’s Peas. This was on Youtube.
The students also shook dice and then covered the number with dot paints. These are drying so they will come home next week.
We also did a fireworks art project to celebrate the New Year. The students drew the fireworks. Then a line of glue was put on the drawings and the students sprinkled salt on the glue. Then the children got to paint them with watercolors. They turned out amazing!
We talked about how Jesus wants us to be kind and share. The students had to identify pictures where children were being kind and circle the picture.
We went outside.

1-6-21 Today we worked on putting numbers in order.
The students worked on beginning letter sounds and tracing.
We learned about Chinese New Year.
We learned about when Jesus was baptized in our Seeds magazine. John the Baptist baptized Jesus and then the Heavens broke open with light and the Holy Spirit came to Jesus.
The students did a circle art project.
We went outside and enjoyed the nice weather.

1-4-21 Happy New Year everyone! Sorry, I forgot the update. It’s been a long time since we were in school. Here it is!
We talked about resolutions and made a resolution. Those went home.
We learned about the letter Ff and the number 17.
We did a sight word graphing sheet that went home as well.
We also did some New Year’s art.
We went outside and enjoyed the nice weather.
12-21-20 Today we did a smart tv activity on Starfall. We are working on the letter Ll. The students also had to find the number 16 in the classroom.
The music teacher came and sang Christmas songs with the class.
I read the story, There was an old Lady who Swallowed a Bell.
We made snowflake ornaments and those are coming home in the student’s folders.
The students did a Christmas find. They had to find a picture and then write the first letter in the box that matched the picture.
We went outside on this windy day.

12-18-20 Today we went to the gym and played line tag.
We did an alphabet activity where the students needed to put the letters in order on our smart tv.
I read the story, No Room at the Inn. We talked about how Jesus wants us to treat people like we want to be treated.
We did a Christmas tree art project. All Christmas art projects are coming home today in a paper bag so you have them at your house to display.
The students also put numbers in order from 6-15 like a puzzle. Then they glued them down to another paper.
We went outside.

12-16-20 Today I read the story, Pete the Cat Saves Christmas. It’s a cute story with a similar cadence to the night before Christmas.
Each student had to find a letter Oo in the classroom but it couldn’t be the same one that another person found. Everyone was able to find one.
We did a dice toss with the different letters on each side. The children had to identify the letter and say the sound it makes. Some of the students were able to think of their own words that started with that letter.
We made Rudolphs today.
I also read the book, The Christmas Story. This was another pop-up book by the author Robert Sabuda. The students really seem to enjoy these.

12-14-20 This week we are learning about the letter Oo and the number 15. We did an Oo activity on starfall.com and practiced writing o’s.
We lit our 3rd advent candle, the pink one, which stands for Joy.
We talked about poinsettias and made poinsettias. I read, The Legend of the Poinsettia and having never read it before, it made me cry. It was about a family. The mom and daughter where going to make a new blanket for baby Jesus for the church nativity scene. The mom got sick and couldn’t finish so the daughter tried and made a mess of it. She hid outside the church during the procession and a lady came to talk to her that she should be joining the rest of the people but the girl said she didn’t have a gift. The lady told her any gift would do so the girl picked weeds and brought them in. While she was praying to baby Jesus, the weeds turned into flowers with stars on the top (poinsettias). It was very touching.
The music teacher came in and sang Christmas songs with us.
We went out on this very cold day. Even though there is no snow, snow pants will keep the students warmer on days like today, so please watch the weather.
Picture retake day is on Wednesday and a note is coming home in the student’s folders about it.

12-11-20 Today we talked about being kind. The students were able to look at pictures and decide if the people were being kind or mean. We circled the kind people with a red crayon and put an x on the people doing mean things with a blue crayon.
I read the story, Elves Night before Christmas. We then wrote letters to Santa. Those are coming home in an envelope marked to Santa. We also made a Santa art project.
We got to go to the gym today. We played a tag game called Lions and Unicorns.
We went outside.

12-9-20 We talked about things we can do for Advent. Praying for people or doing kind deeds. We made a paper chain with the people that the students wanted to pray for and the kind deeds. We hung this on the school Christmas tree with the ornaments that the other grades made.
We did our Seeds magazine. The Gospel will be about John the Baptist again.
We made Christmas wreaths and did a Christmas letter matching game. Students had to match the capital letter with the lowercase letter.

12-7-20 Today we lit our 2nd advent candle.
We watched a short video about St. Nicholas and gold coins are coming home in the student’s folders.
We videotaped our Christmas songs and readings. The students did an amazing job! It was a busy day.
We made Christmas trees to hang in our window. When you drive by take a look. They should be up later today or tomorrow morning.

12-4-20 Today we made a list of words that start with the letter Dd.
I read the story, Twas the Night Before Christmas. This was a pop-up book and the students seemed to enjoy it.
We finished our nativities and made a Christmas ornament.

For religion, we talked about the different seasons in the Church including Advent. We also talked about baptism.

12-2-20 Today I read the story, Snowmen at Christmas.
We did an art project by dipping Christmas bows in paint and then dabbing them onto a paper. This was then glued on a piece of construction paper and a bow was stuck on the top.
We started making a nativity but will finish on Friday.
We did a graphing activity. The students rolled a die and then colored in the graph of what it was.
We practiced singing Christmas songs.

11-30-20 Today was all about Advent. We made advent wreaths, one for our door and one to go home.

11-23-20 Today we concentrated on Thanksgiving.
I read the story, Run Turkey Run.
We made the placemat that came home today.
We also made turkey crowns. The students had to make a pattern on the headband and then glued the turkey face on it.
We did our Seeds magazine. Sunday is the first day of Advent. We talked about how we get ready for Jesus’ birthday.
We went outside for a little while.

11-20-20 I read the story, Give Thanks for Each Day. We drew a picture of what we are thankful for.
We played a game called Turkey in the Hay. The turkey was hidden under a different shape each time. The students had to close their eyes while it was being hidden. Then we would say a chant and I would pick a student to look under each shape until we found the turkey.
We did a roll a turkey charting activity as well as a beginning sound match.
We learned who the Pope is. We learned that he is the leader of all the Catholic churches.
We went outside on this brisk day.

11-18-20 We had a very busy day.
We did our Seeds magazine. The gospel on Sunday is about whatever you do for someone else, you do it for Jesus. The magazine tied this in with our food drive.
We made turkeys today and the Ms. Jirak wrote what the students are thankful for on the feathers.
I did a pattern block activity with the students. They had to try to make a turkey with the blocks. Then I traced their pictures. They made a face on it and then they had to count and log the amount of the different blocks that were used.
We walked to the Peace Center to deliver all our food. Thank you for your generous donations! We had each child carry one item and then placed the rest in 2 wagons to pull over. This was an impressive parade!
We played outside when we got back from the Peace Center.

11-16-20 This week we will be learning about the letter Rr, the color gray, a hexagon and the number 11.
We did a Starfall activity with the letter Rr today. I had the students go stand by something in our classroom that was the color gray and then by the number 11.
I read the story, Run, Turkey, Run. We played a game where the students needed to identify pictures of turkeys below, above, under, in, first, second, third, in between, middle, etc. They did a nice job recognizing each concept.
The music teacher came in and sang Thanksgiving songs with the students.
The students made turkey tracks and did a turkey tally sheet.
We went outside.

11-13-20 We just found out today that Wednesday, Nov. 25th is a day off for the whole school. So mark that on your calendars that there is no school.
Today we learned all the different jobs that farmers do. I read a story with a title of the same name.
We sang a scarecrow song and made scarecrows.
We learned that the leader of our church is the priest, Fr. Eugene.
We learned the parts of a pumpkin and glued labels on one. We also made a pentagon with sticks.
We went to the gym for a little while.

11-11-20 Today we talked about Veteran’s Day. We did some art to go with that and have it displayed in our classroom windows.
We again talked about harvest. I asked the students what kinds of crops farmers grow. They had great responses. I read the story, Crops on a Farm.
We learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin and the different parts of a pumpkin.
We did our Seeds magazine today. The gospel is about the master who had to go away and he gave talents to his servants. The first 2 servants doubled the talents but the 3rd one did nothing. We learned that we should use the talents that God gave each of us.
The children made a corn art project.
We went outside and enjoyed the lovely snow.

11-9-20 Today our music teacher taught the students about Veteran’s day. Veteran's day will be on Wednesday.
This week we are learning the letter Hh, the color black, the number 10 and a pentagon.
We learned about the letter Hh on Starfall.
The theme is Harvest so we learned what that means. We talked about what farmers do to harvest their crops.
I read the book, Seasons on a Farm. It was about different things farmers do in each season.
We did a scarecrow, pumpkin match. The students had to identify the number the scarecrow had and then find the corresponding card that had the right number of pumpkins on it.
We made a Fall wreath.

11-4-20 Today we used dot paint to trace our names. Then the students could write their names with dot paint without tracing.
We did a star art project because our shape we are learning about is the star shape.
I read the story, A Tree is For…. We talked about what a tree is for, even before I read the story and the students came up with most of the ideas that were in the story. I love this class!
We did a sorting activity. Students had to decide how to sort the objects and then go forth with their plan. They sorted by color and by shape.
We practiced writing the number 9 and did graphing.

11-2-20 Today we talked about living and non-living things. Living things need water and food.
This week we will be focusing on the letter Ee, the number 9, the color white and a star shape.

We compared quantities of things. Which has more or less.

I read the story, When the Monkeys Come Back. We talked a little about habitats and what happens when a habitat goes away. The story was about the forest being cut down and the monkeys leaving. The monkeys didn’t come back until the forest regrew.
We made elephants and wrote the word elephant.
Our music teacher came in and sang songs with the students.
We went outside and enjoyed the awesome weather.

10-28-20 Today we read the story, There was an old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat. As I read, the students were able to follow along interactively.
We did a bat art project with a crescent moon. This week we are working on the letter Kk, the color orange, the number 8 and the crescent shape.
We worked on Starfall, on the letter Kk.
The students learned about saints in the Seeds magazine. Sunday is all Saints day.
We did a listening activity. I would give instructions twice and the students needed to do them.

Today we played musical alphabet. We walked around the pumpkin patch (letters on pumpkins) while music was playing and when it stopped the student stood by the closest letter and said the letter name and the sound it makes.
We made a candy corn art project with torn paper. Our room looks fabulous with all the artwork!
We did a pumpkin sort sheet. The students had to cut the pumpkins out and glue them into the right column according to size.
We played rainbow tag in the gym and enjoyed the snow outside.

10-23-20 Today in preschool we got to see the firefighters! They showed us their gear and dressed up in it so we know what to expect if they ever have to come to our houses. They showed us the fire trucks and all the things they keep in there, such as the hoses, saws, fire extinguisher, ladder and much more.
They gave us fire fighter helmets, color books and stickers to take home.
We painted hearts since that was the shape of the week.
We played a syllable game with words of what a fire fighter uses such as engine, axe, hose, flame, helmet, boot, and a few others. Then we made a dot on our papers for how many syllables we hear.
We sang a fire truck song and practiced the things we learned this week.
We worked on Starfall on the letter Cc.

10-21-20 Today in our sensory bins, we had items that got covered with shaving cream to represent fire. The students then got to use a spray bottle to put out the fire.
I also demonstrated a chemical reaction by putting baking soda into a cup, I added a drop or red food coloring and some yellow to make orange. Then I poured vinegar over the baking soda and it really foamed up and overflowed into our sensory bin.
We read a story about fire fighters and did an art project of a fire person.
The students played a game with a die. They took turns rolling their own dice and then had to cover a matching number on their card.
We did our Seeds magazine. The gospel reading is about the 2 most important rules.
We went outside and enjoyed that wonderful snow!

10-19-20 Today we started our fire safety unit. The students already know quite a lot about this subject.
I read the story, No Dragons for Tea. It was about an accidental fire and what the characters did to stay safe.
They needed to stay low so they were under the smoke and to check doorknobs to see if they were hot and what that meant.
To have a meeting place outside that the whole family knows about.
To not go back into the burning building if you forgot something in there.
This week we will focus on the letter Cc, the number 7, the color pink and the heart shape.
We practiced the number 7 today. We also made firefighter hats.
The music teacher, Mrs Gorr, taught us some Halloween songs.
We went to the gym and played duck, duck, gray duck.
We also went outside and enjoyed the snowy weather.

10-14-20 Today we again talked about animals and bugs that make their homes in trees.
We used some pinecones and acorns to do some process art. A paper was put into a box and then some paint was squirted in and then the students rolled pinecones and acorns around. These turned out great!
We did an activity about rhyming words.
I read the Grouchy Ladybug and we talked about the characters in the story. We had a discussion why the grouchy ladybug always said the other animals weren’t big enough.
We did our Seeds lesson today.
We spent a little time in the gym and went outside as well.

10-12-20 Today we talked about what types of things live in trees. I read the story, Who Lives in Trees? The students came up with some great ideas before I started.
This week we are learning about the letter Nn, the color purple, the number 6 and rectangles.
We did an activity with counters. I would ask the students a question such as, if these counters were chips and we were going to feed them to 4 birds, how many chips would we need? Then I would say, Oh, oh, one flew away, how many do we need now. I asked them all sorts of these questions to get them thinking and using the counters.
We made owls today.
We went to the gym for a bit and outside.

Today we talked about things that grow on trees.
I read a Fall book about leaves and another called Chicka Chicka 1,2,3. This was about numbers going up the apple tree and then they all come down.
We did an art project using apples to paint. The students colored the trunk of the tree with their markers and then stamped a half of an apple into paint and then on their picture for the leaves.
We did a page in our Seeds supplemental book about the church.
We went to the gym to play rainbow tag and enjoyed the beautiful weather outside.

10-7-20 Today we did a KWL chart about trees. What we know about trees, what we want to find out about trees and we will have to wait with the letter L because that is for what we learned.
I read the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and we did an art project to go with that.
We talked about shortest and longest in reference to sticks. We arranged them from shortest to longest and then from longest to shortest. We talked about measurement. We measured the sticks with our hands, our fingers and a ruler.
We worked on our Seeds magazine.
We did a number review. I also had the students go around the room to see if they could find the letter Pp, the number 5, the color brown and a diamond shape.
We went to the gym and played line tag and we also went outside and enjoyed the nice weather.

10-5-20 This week, we are working on the letter Pp, the number 5, the color brown and the diamond shape.
Today we talked about trees. The students traced their hand and arm to make branches and a trunk for a tree. This was glued onto another paper and then the children used q-tips to make different colored leaves with paint.
We used blocks in small groups to make towers using more or fewer blocks. I would say, make a tower with 4 blocks. Then I would give them another instruction to use fewer blocks to make their tower. I explained that fewer means less. Sometimes I would say to use more blocks.
I read the story, A Tree named Steve. I also read a Fall leaves story.
We went to the gym and played color tag.
We went outside for about 20 minutes and enjoyed the nice weather.

9-30-20 Today we talked about Piñatas. What happens with piñatas and what is inside them.
I read the book, The Biggest Apple Ever. Then we made paper mache apples. We got our hands all goopy and put the papers on the balloon. We talked about that this is also how a piñata is made. We will paint the apples on Friday.
We also had a discussion about symmetry. That symmetry is when something looks the same on one side as the other. The students made a symmetrical butterfly that is coming home.
We went out and enjoyed the nice weather although it was a little breezy.

9-28-20 Today was our school marathon. We walked or ran for about 20 minutes and then were able to collect our prizes. It was fun!
Our letter this week is Ii, color is green, shape is oval and number is 4. We read the story, The Gingerbread Man. We talked about the characters and had a discussion of what happened.
I also read the story, A Color of his Own. We then did an art project where the students mixed paint.
We went outside for a bit in the chilly weather.

Today we read the story, Stand Tall Molly Lou Mellon and had a good discussion about it. It was about a girl that stood up for herself and was proud of herself.

9-23-20 Today was picture day! The students did a great job.
We worked on our Seeds magazine today. Those will be coming home today. The gospel story is about a man with 2 sons. He tells the first son to go work in the vineyard and the son says, “no”. The son changes his mind and goes to work. The dad tells the 2nd son to go work in the vineyard and he says yes but doesn’t go. We talked about which son did the right thing.
I read a story titled, Families of the World. We talked about how all families are different. We talked about making memories with our families and the students drew a picture of their family. Those will also come home.
We went out and enjoyed the fabulous weather.

9-21-2020 Since the first day of Fall is tomorrow, we talked about the change of the season and what happens. The children knew that the leaves change color and fall to the ground. Some knew that animals hibernate and one students said that some go to a warmer climate so we talked about migration and some birds and insects that migrate.
We did a Fall leaf project. You will see those in the windows tomorrow.
Today was our first day of music. Mrs. Gorr came to the classroom and sang songs with the students. They also got to use rhythm sticks.
This week we will be learning about the letter Tt, the number 3, the color yellow and the triangle. We did a search for those in the classroom today.
We went to the gym for a little while and went and enjoyed the beautiful weather.

9-14 to 9-18-2020 Monday We talked about uppercase and lowercase letters and did an activity with that. Our letter of the week is Aa, shape is a circle, and color is red so our art project was making an apple. We painted a paper plate red and used our handprint for the leaf.
I read the story Charlie Anderson. We talked about the author and illustrator. We also discussed who the characters were in the story. Also, we talked about the difference between text and pictures.
Wednesday Today was our first day working with our Seeds magazine. Seeds teaches the gospel reading in a kid friendly way. We will do these every Wednesday now through, I believe, April.
I read the story Jalapeno Bagels to the students. We talked about the characters in the story.
We used instruments to tap a beat and did the rhyme, Hickory dickory dock. We also did an art project to go along with it.
We enjoyed time on the playground.
Friday Today we learned about Jacob and his sons. Jacob gave his youngest son Joseph a coat of many colors. His brothers were jealous and sold him into slavery. Joseph was put in charge of all the grains in Egypt and when his brothers came for food, Joseph forgave them and gave them food.
We did a rhythm exercise. I played a beat on a drum and the students had to do movement either fast or slow depending on how it was being played.
I read the book Peeny Butter Fudge. We talked about the author and illustrator and made predictions of what would happen.
There are sunflowers outside Mrs. Heinz’s classroom in the Mary garden. We made a sunflower project today.
Marathon shirts went home last week and those can be worn on Fridays to school.

Week of 9-7-20 Wednesday The students found their names in the classroom in several different spots. We did the Humpty Dumpty Rhyme and also did an art project that went along with it. I read the book, A Pocket for Corduroy, and I also started the beginning of the year assessments to find out what your children know. This will take some time and will probably continue into next week. I show them colors and shapes to see if they can identify them. I also check which letters and numbers they are familiar with. We were able to go for a walk around the school building because the playground equipment was wet. Friday Today we practiced what to do if there would be a fire drill or a lockdown drill. I read the book, Wemberly Worried. The students worked on a name project with Mrs. Jirak while I continued with the beginning of the year assessments. The students went on a color, letter and shape hunt in the classroom today. They all found a square, the letter Ss and something that is the color blue. We went outside for a little while today. I will only be doing weekly updates rather than daily updates. If there is anything that you need to contact me for, please do.
